Hi all, you might have caught something in the news recently about a little star in the Orion nebula that shines in the winter sky in our northern hemisphere.
It's that star that hangs out around Orion's left shoulder: Betelgeuse.
You see, the star's been dimming, and it's caused quite a stir in astronomy circles as they try to deduce why.
When news outlets caught wind of it, tons of headlines erupted with speculation it was going nova.
If you do see articles claiming Betelgeuse is going to go nova soon, please know it's not necessarily true.
The truth is, we just don't know. We're observing and taking data.
Spectroscopy has actually been trending to a brighter relative intensity since December, as seen here.
That said, there's still a very interesting dip at the 7400 Angstrom wavelength! Only time will tell ... although we'll have enough warning to be able to let you know in advance. Then it'll light up the sky spectacularly for a few months!
Thanks for spending time checking in with me!
